Etsy can be a great platform to sell creative products of all kinds, but it’s important to ensure people find your shop and items. As you work to grow your Etsy shop, there are certain ways to optimize it for improved performance and visibility.

Here, we’ll explore some tips to help you get the most from your Etsy store with good search engine optimization.

1. Use the Right Keywords

One of the most important aspects of SEO is keyword usage, and this is no exception when it comes to Etsy shop optimization. However, you must know how to properly choose and implement keywords for your shop.

Try to choose highly specific keywords that will draw searches from potential customers who are truly interested in what you have to offer. For instance, if you’re selling coffee cups with certain images on them, try to target “coffee cup” with a modifier that includes the image. For example, you might have coffee cups with motivational phrases, in which case you could target “coffee cup with motivational phrase” or use the specific phrase as the modifier for “coffee cup.”

Generally, you’ll want to target long-tail keywords over broad short-tail alternatives, with long-tail keywords being around three or more words in length. You can use tools like Google’s Keyword Planner to find the right keywords for your products.

2. Place Keywords Throughout Your Store

Once you’ve found the keywords you want to target, ensure you use them in the right places in your store and individual listings.

Product titles are among the most important places to target your keywords. Choose the best keywords to describe your products in a highly specific way, but avoid making your product titles too long. As you write your titles, start with the most valuable keywords and end with less relevant ones. Often, it’s best to use modifiers in the front, followed by a primary keyword and other product details.

An example of a good product title could be something like “Tiger T-Shirt With Embroidered Design | Animal Printed T-Shirt.” This shirt could have a cartoon tiger design that some are looking for in a T-shirt, while some may search more broadly for T-shirts with animal designs—this product title would target both.

Don’t neglect your Etsy store title, either—if it makes sense to do so, include keywords in this element to help your store perform better. However, something simply more memorable and personalized could ensure people find you.

In addition to your titles, include relevant keywords in the tags section. Optimizing tags can help further boost rankings for your store and product listings, but you should use broader terms in this section than you would in your main title. For instance, you might include tags like “t-shirt,” “shirt,” “comfort t-shirt,” “animal design,” and other short-tail keywords that supplement your more specific long-tail keyword-rich title.

Just avoid using the same keywords too frequently across your store and products. Using the above animal shirt design example, you would want to avoid using “animal printed T-shirt” or even “tiger T-shirt” too often if there are multiple products matching this description. You might have a theme of tiger-printed shirts, for example, in which case you might want to include the number of tigers on the shirt, the type of tiger (e.g., Bengal or Siberian), and other descriptors unique to each shirt.

3. Build Backlinks for Your Shop

Another key element of good SEO is link building. Etsy, Google, and other search engine algorithms prefer to rank stores and pages that other pages and sites link to, as this kind of linking indicates that an Etsy owner, store, or product is reputable and worth ranking higher than others. The more high-quality backlinks your site has, the higher it will rank on Google and Etsy.

There are plenty of ways to get backlinks to your store via other platforms. One way to do so is to connect with influencers on social media, offering them a significant discount or a free product in exchange for a video review. You can also share your products and store on social media channels that you use, which can attract more clicks and encourage people to share your links on their own profiles.

Another classic means of building backlinks for any website is to engage in an outreach campaign to connect with bloggers and website owners. An example of this could entail sending an email to a blogger in your industry, asking for a link back to your Etsy shop or a particular product in exchange for promoting the blog or the blogger’s own Etsy shop.

In some cases, you could connect with other Etsy shop owners and build a relationship with them, engaging in a cross-promotion to sell each other’s products.

4. Refresh Your Product Listings

The freshness of your product listings also plays a key role in how well you rank on Etsy. The platform prefers newer and more relevant Etsy shops and products than others, as the algorithm favors new products over older and potentially outdated listings.

Over time, consider renewing your listings on the platform, which can refresh them for anywhere from hours to days. For example, you could incorporate new relevant, trending keywords into an appropriate product title, which could help get that product higher in rankings when people search for those terms.

Also, ensure you refresh your listings at the right time when people are more likely to engage. Refreshing your titles and other product details could help you connect with audiences if you do so during peak hours of activity, such as midday.

5. Write Google-optimized Meta Descriptions

For more indirect SEO optimization, you should write high-quality, compelling descriptions for your Etsy products. These descriptions will appear on Google beneath the links to your pages, and they should encourage people to visit your store based on the description of the product. Accurately describe the product and its features or design, and keep the length under 160 characters (but ideally no more than 155) to ensure it shows up in its entirety.

Don’t worry about including keywords in your descriptions, either. These pieces of content should be all about getting people to visit your store, which can subsequently indicate to Google that your products and shop are worth ranking.
